Summer Reading has started again at the Strawberry Point Library! Posted July 13th Read More | MINUTES OF THE JULY MEETING OF THE STARMONT BOARD OF EDUCATION JULY 12, 2010 July 13th Read More | Ask the ISU Garden Experts About: Earwigs, Uprooted Evergreens and Raspberries Posted July 13th Read More | Ash Borer Update As you probably know, the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) has been found in Iowa. The infestation was found in Allamakee County near the Mississippi river. The purple “prism” traps have been put in ash trees at various locations and will be inspected through the summer to monitor the spread of the EAB.
Since the main threat of spreading this insect comes from moving firewood, don’t move firewood from one location to another. Killing all the ash trees in your neighborhood is a steep price to pay for saving a few dollars worth of firewood.
Just because an ash tree shows dieback of the crown, shoots growing from the base or trunk of the tree, bark splitting or increased woodpecker damage, doesn’t mean that it has an EAB infestation. There are other ash problems that will cause similar problems
This is especially true in areas where the EAB have been recently detected. It can take several years for damage to appear after the insect first enters the tree. Monitor the health of your trees; stressed trees are attacked first. Researchers purposely injure occasional ash trees to attract the beetle to these “sentinel” tree. At this point, treating ash trees with an insecticide will do little if any good. Treatment should not be considered until there is a confirmed outbreak within 15 miles of your location. There are several treatment options available for control of this insect. Research continues for the best option, but so far control has been variable, especially on larger trees. The most effective products available right now need to be applied by a commercial pesticide applicator, but “homeowner” products are also available. Eventually, EAB will be in all of Iowa. If you have a high-value tree on your property and you want to cover your ash, go to the ISU Extension website at www.extension.iastate.edu and look for PM 2084, Emerald Ash Borer Management Options.
