Ash Borer Update

As you probably know, the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) has been found in Iowa. The infestation was found in Allamakee County near the Mississippi river. The purple “prism” traps have been put in ash trees at various locations and will be inspected through the summer to monitor the spread of the EAB.

Since the main threat of spreading this insect comes from moving firewood, don’t move firewood from one location to another. Killing all the ash trees in your neighborhood is a steep price to pay for saving a few dollars worth of firewood.

Just because an ash tree shows dieback of the crown, shoots growing from the base or trunk of the tree, bark splitting or increased woodpecker damage, doesn’t mean that it has an EAB infestation. There are other ash problems that will cause similar problems

This is especially true in areas where the EAB have been recently detected. It can take several years for damage to appear after the insect first enters the tree. Monitor the health of your trees; stressed trees are attacked first. Researchers purposely injure occasional ash trees to attract the beetle to these “sentinel” tree. At this point, treating ash trees with an insecticide will do little if any good. Treatment should not be considered until there is a confirmed outbreak within 15 miles of your location.

There are several treatment options available for control of this insect. Research continues for the best option, but so far control has been variable, especially on larger trees. The most effective products available right now need to be applied by a commercial pesticide applicator, but “homeowner” products are also available. Eventually, EAB will be in all of Iowa. If you have a high-value tree on your property and you want to cover your ash, go to the ISU Extension website at www.extension.iastate.edu and look for  PM 2084, Emerald Ash Borer Management Options.

Older, Wiser, Livelier, Souls
Algific Slopes and Ice Caves

Thursday, July 15th
Shuttle leaves at 10:30
Reservations Required

Come join another of Osborne’s Older, Wiser, Livelier, Souls programs on Thursday, July 15th.  Keeping with this year’s theme “Rediscovering Northeast Iowa Treasures”, this month’s program will be a visit to some of Iowa’s rarest environments, the Algific Slope.

We will be visiting different sites in our area to discover the magic of these beautiful and intriguing Iowa wonders.  These cold air slopes are known for their threatened and endangered plants and animals, rugged beauty, and rare ecosystems more like ice age remnants or places much further north.  The last stop will be Bixby State Preserve where we will cross a stream to view the Ice Cave there.  Participants will need old tennis shoes or water shoes for crossing the small shallow stream to experience this spectacular spot.

Participants will ride a shuttle to each location from Osborne Park.  As in the past, an optional lunch will follow the tour.

Participants should meet at Osborne Park at 10:30 to ride the Shuttle.  The Program is $1.00 and lunch is $6.00, reservations are required at 245-1516.
